When the year-long collaboration between Pathshala South Asian Media Institute and VII Academy began in early 2021, our focus was centered on the portrayal of regionally, ecologically, socially, and personally meaningful stories from the perspective of young photographers of South Asia. A crucial aspect of the work that emanated from this joint effort was the significance of research in shaping visual storytelling, a firsthand of which we witnessed as these 8 artists narrated their long-term projects and, whilst doing so, created diverse research materials to further shape their stories.

Unprepared for the restrictions that the onset of the second wave of the Covid pandemic had brought to their respective regions, many were confined within their homes. However, this created an incredible opportunity – to explore (and expand into) into each artist’s distinctive realities.

From the diverse regions of Lahore, New Delhi, Bhopal, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Kolkata, and Colombo, we see eight stories that powerfully and intimately manifest the probing of self-image and worth through the body, women’s identity, and the boundaries that confine it, the delicate relationship between motherhood and marriage, the loss of a parent and grief, the fragility of ecology, the overwhelming impact of climate change, and the struggle of farmers in the eye of political crisis. Collectively, these stories provide a lens to realizing the urgency of personal storytelling and an expanded narrative of South Asia.
