Rasel Chowdhury receives 2016 Samdani Art Award
Pathshala Alumnus Rasel Chowdhury has won the Samdani Art Award 2016 out of 300 applicants. The announcement was done on 5 February 2O16 at the Dhaka Art Summit by the Chief Curator Diana Campbell Bentancourt.
Rasel Chowdhury who represented as a contract photographer for New York Times and Getty lmage will receive an opportunity to seek scholarship of 3 Months residency at Delfina Foundation in London in order to work on his craft.
He won the award for his work on ‘Railway Longings’ where he highlighted his train journey and photographed the experience filled with nostalgia and also showed the transformation of landscapes and rail structures ranging from villages to towns.
There were also six finalist from Pathshala in this year which included Shumon Ahmed, Gazi Nafis Ahmed, Samsul Alam Helal, Salma Abedin Prithi, Rupam Roy, Atish Saha, Shimul Saha . The artists’ works are included in the finalists’ exhibition curated by Daniel Bauman.
The award and its eponymous foundation was founded in 2011 by the Bangladeshi industrialist, collector and arts philanthropist Rajeeb Samdani and his wife Nadia in order to shine a light on Bangladesh’s art scene.
Earlier Pathshala Alumnus Khaled Hasan had won the 1st Samdani Art Award in 2012. Interestingly, the Asian Art Biennale conducted by the government of Bangladesh prohibits the entry of photography and video.
